John Carlo’s smile is so engaging, so compelling, so open, so full of enjoyment with the life he was living, it felt counter-intuitive not to join him in this joy! The photos show his tremendous capacity to explore: whether an art form, a landscape, or people in his landscape. A true seeker. I love the photos of him carrying the camera equipment. There was no “slouching” under the weight of that equipment. It appeared a very part of him, catching and framing an object of his interest, a moment in time he wanted to preserve. I love the photos of him as a little boy. We were so fortunate to see him often then, in his early years, before he ventured out to the world. I remember his gleeful eyes, and his quiet chuckles over the years at Murray’s spontaneous jokes and silliness during the many holidays we spent together at the dining room table. I am very grateful for the time I shared with JC in Italy when he was a little guy and a wonderful traveling companion; and, especially more recently, when JC met Murray and I at the airport in New Orleans, where we shared some fun times, as well as JC's own jokes about Murray’s having left his suitcase back at the airport in New York!

John-Carlo, you brought great joy into our lives and the love we shared continues to grow in our hearts. You lived life so vividly filling your days with adventures, passion for work, creative art, time in nature and hobbies. Good times and laughter with family and friends greatly enriched your life as well as ours. John-Carlo, you gave us all the perfect gift of your love and beautiful smiles. And magically, you made them infinite. There is a big space in our hearts that will always be yours.

My dear cousin has been foremost on my mind from the moment my parents delivered the terrible news to me. But despite the many tears shed on that day and the days that followed, whenever John-Carlo appears in my thoughts he does not bring sadness with him. Rather I have been remembering the traits that make me love him so much, his sly smile, quick and clever wit and that unique creative spark that made me proud to share a bloodline with him. It was a joyous gathering at my parents house on April 18, 1992 when he was introduced to the family. I remember the date because it was my 20th birthday and my baby cousin was the best birthday present I could have asked for. As the years passed, I watched him evolve from my “baby cousin” to a kind and courageous soul and then into a visionary artist unapologetically living his truth out loud. Our conversations were always deep and astute and I was continually both proud of him and inspired by him. He cultivated a daring artistic universe of his own and soaking up his works recently – film pieces, photography even his Spotify playlists have been evoking his bold spirit and providing me with much solace. It has been a pleasure to share the earth with John-Carlo and we will cherish his memory for the rest of our days.

You were the son any parent can wish for. Our times together were always joyous, precious and full of laughter and love. I miss and think about you every day. You will always be in my heart, and forever loved.
